Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Beijing’s sabre-rattling” (July 1). The motive of China is simple and clear. It wants to bring Bhutan into its sphere of influence by indulging in a symbolic but significant aggression on the Bhutanese territory whose defence is looked after by India.
Beijing wants to show Bhutan that India cannot defend it. But the latter knows it well that if it hugs the Middle Kingdom and abandons India, Tibet’s fate would await it. The freedom presently enjoyed by Bhutan will be lost for ever.
After defying the ruling of the International Court of Justice on South China Sea, China has elevated itself from a regional bully to an international one. This is a national problem.
The Modi Government must take the Opposition into confidence and adopt a polite but firm stance vis-à-vis China. Externally, India must sign mutual defence pacts with other countries who are willing to do so.
