Control hooliganism

TT Sakaria

Sir — This has reference to the report, “Recover stir losses from UP, Haryana: SC to Rly” (July 25). It is heartening that the Supreme Court has passed strictures and directed Indian Railways to recover damages from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana for disruption of rail traffic and damage to public property during a violent Jat agitation three years ago. The judgement obviously reveals the court’s disgust over such acts of violence and destruction by agitators who resort to strikes and shutdowns and go on a rampage to get their demands fulfilled.

In fact, it is the common man who finds himself at the rough end of such situations. It is he who is forced to bear the brunt in the form of high inflation, as the State Government sooner or later imposes additional taxes to make up for the damage caused to public property and assets.
