A senior functionary of the Congress in Kerala’s Wayanad district allegedly committed suicide in a party office on Sunday following his defeat in the just-concluded civic poll.

The body of Wayanad district Congress secretary PV John (65) of Padiyara, Payyambally was found hanging from a ceiling fan at the party’s block committee office in Club Kunnu, Mananthawady on Sunday. John had reached the office from home on Sunday morning in his own car.

The Congress leader had contested the civic poll held on November 2 as official party candidate in the Puthenpura division of the Mananthawady Municipality but could get only the fourth position. In the division which had a total of 994 votes, John had polled only 39 votes. The division was bagged by an Independent candidate while a Congress rebel polled 195 votes.

John, who had worked as the Mananthawady block committee president of the Congress for a long time, had vacated that position recently after being promoted as district general secretary. He was a member of the Mananthawady Grama Panchayat earlier.
