Bengal Global Business Summit today

Saugar Sengupta

The Mamata Banerjee Government on Friday will host country’s biggest business meet albeit with a bad taste in mouth after a violent land agitation at Bhangore near Kolkata culminated in police firing, deaths and humiliating capitulation by the State before a demand to shift a mega power grid — a development that could hurt investment no end.

The Summit is going to be held against the backdrop of Supreme Court verdict restoring 900 acres of land — on which  Tata Nano plant once stood— to the farmers, demonetisation and  the Bhangore movement.

The mega yearly show, third in a row would be inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee and is expected to be joined by 25 countries, including Russia, China, South Korea, Norway, Germany, the UAE, Bangladesh, Malaysia Bangladesh etc, State Finance Minister Amit Mitra informed adding about 3,000 delegates would attend the plenary session.

The presence of the likely investors and eventual translation of their promises — if at all made — into action could go a long way in wiping off the anti-industry image of the Trinamool Government whichcame to power in the wake of Singur and Nandigram movements, where major industrial ventures like Tata Nano plant and a huge proposed chemical hub became casualties.

Hence much of the future investment proposals would depend upon the CM’s intent and convincing prowess though Bhangore development that saw the Government call off the `3,000 crore power grid project, which had almost reached the inauguration stage (like Singur Nano plant).
