Assam on alert after Peshawar attack

The Assam Government has alerted all the districts in the State and asked the security forces to be prepared to tackle any emergency situation.

The instruction came in the wake of barbaric attack on an Army-run school in Pakistan’s Peshawar by the Taliban terrorists that left over 145 killed including nearly 130  children on Tuesday. The Assam Forest Minister told this to the State legislative Assembly on Friday. The Minister was replying to a question by BJP legislator Ranjit Das. Das raised concern over the security situation particularly in schools as the State DGP had recently stated that some militant outfits were planning to trigger violence between December 25 to January 26 next year.

“The Government has issued security related instructions to all the districts in the backdrop of the recent attack in Peshawar in Pakistan. All the Quick Reaction Teams and Bomb Disposal Squads have been asked to be prepared to thwart any such disaster that might take place any time,” Hussain said while replying to the question.

The Forest Minister further informed the House that although 13 militant outfits have been engaged in peace process in Assam yet the anti-talk factions of the Ulfa and NDFB and some other militant outfits are still active in the State and that they have been trying to carry out violence. The Minister referred to the anti-insurgency operations in the State under the Unified Command Structure and said that the police and security forces have foiled several attempt of these militant outfits to carry out their evil designs.

“However, two factions of the Ulfa and NDFB — opposing to the talk process —have been trying to continue their subversive activities in the state through their camps in Myanmar and Bangladesh. These outfits have also been working in parleys with other North-Eastern militant outfits and other anti-Indian forces,” Hussain said.
