The Centre constituted a five-member panel of leading doctors in the country to oversee the day-to-day functioning of the Medical Council of India (MCI) from Tuesday. The Supreme Court approved this decision of the Centre after the tenure of the Committee headed by former CJI RM lodha, earlier constituted by the Court, ended in May this year. The Court said that any decision taken by the Oversight panel will require approval of the Centre. The names include Randeep Guleria, Director AIIMS (Delhi), Jagat Ram, Director of PGIMER at Chandigarh, BN Gangadharan, Director of NIMHANS at Bengaluru, VK Paul, Professor and Head of Paediatrics (AIIMS), and Nikhil Tandon, Professor and Head of Endocrinology (AIIMS). One among the five will be nominated as Chairperson, Oversight Committee by the Centre. A five-judge Bench headed by CJI JS Khehar wondered if they had time to spare for dealing with affairs at MCI due to their busy schedule. This Committee will oversee and approve all decisions of MCI and even issue remedial directions for improving the medical regulator's functioning.
