A man suspected of killing his wife and her cousin in north Delhi's Timarpur allegedly committed suicide in his native village in Kanpur in the early hours on Tuesday, police said. The body of Mohit (25) was found hanging from the ceiling of a temporary structure when a team of Delhi Police reached his village to arrest him in connection with the twin murders, police said.
A senior police officer said that Mohit had confessed to his father about killing his wife Premlata and his cousin Sonia at Wazirabad on Sunday night.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), Jatin Narwal said , a strip of sulphas tablets was found from the spot and there was a mark on his wrist which indicated that he had tried to slit his wrist, after which he hanged himself from a tubewell near his house in Kanpur Dehat. However, no suicide note was found.
A senior police officer said that the suspected accused Mohit had made three attempts to kill himself before he finally died by hanging. “He first tried to kill himself with poison. When that did not kill him, he slit his wrist. Finally, he walked atop a temporary structure in a field and hanged himself,” added the officer.
On Monday night, at around 12 am, when a team of Delhi Police managed to trace the location of Mohit's phone near Kanpur Dehat, they went to his village. However, since it was night time, the team could not find Mohit.
It was only on Tuesday morning that the team managed to locate Mohit, only to find him hanging from a cloth tied to a tubewell. On Monday morning, Mohit's wife, Premlatha (27) and cousin Soniya (22) were found dead at the latter's home in north Delhi's Wazirabad village around 11am.
Police said they had been stabbed in their necks and faces with a knife and a screwdriver at least a dozen times each. The two weapons were found at the murder spot later.
Since the two women's mobile phones were found lying smashed next to their bodies, police suspected the murders had something to do with an unwanted call.
Police said that although with the death of Mohit, the case has come to a dead end, yet they are trying to establish the exact sequence of events that happened on Sunday night which led to the double murders.
A senior officer said, “We are scanning through the call detail records of Premlata. The CDR indicates that Mohit was suspicious about his wife, Premlata, having an affair with another man. On the night of the murder, Premlata had got a call from that number from which she used to receive several calls. It is suspected that due to this call, Mohit allegedly killed his wife and in a bid to save his sister in law, Sonia too was bludgeoned to death.”
