The Delhi Police Special Cell on Wednesday arrested a 33-year-old man with massive ammunition cache from Delhi. The Special Cell seized 50 pistols of .32 bore and 100 magazines from him.

The accused was arrested from Central Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan Area after cops intercepted his car.  He was said to be an arms peddler and is being questioned, police told on Wednesday.

“It has emerged out as the biggest haul of illegal pistols in the Capital in the recent past,” said DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.

The accused identified as Savinder Kumar, hailing from Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, was previously also arrested in a case of attempt to murder, registered in police station Partapur, Meerut, UP.

Yadav said, “The consignment on which the accused left for, was meant for criminals in Delhi and National Capital Regions.” “The arrest came on the tip-off received by the special cell about the large network of illegal weapons having roots in Bihar and operating in NCR, Delhi and adjoining areas of UP,” Yadav added. With the sources deployed in several areas and technical surveillance, the name of accused Kumar was brought up. Police was told about Kumar being active carrier and supplier of sophisticated illegal arms to criminals.

“We received information on Tuesday that Kumar will come near Sarai Kale Khan in Cherry coloured Chevrolet bearing Delhi number Dl-8Cl-3202. “A trap was laid down near the area and Kumar was nabbed from the spot,” said Yadav. “Initially he tried to hoodwink police by stating that he was having only one weapon but when police team carefully searched the car, they found a cavity under the boot of the car where remaining pistols were kept,” added t the DCP.

During interrogation, accused told police that he started supplying illegal pistols in order to ease out money and has been involved in the crime for the last 18 months. He also revealed that during this period he brought six consignments of illegal fire arms from Dhanbad and Jharkhand. “He claims to have delivered about 400 semi automatic high quality illegal pistols in Delhi, NCR and Western UP,” DCP added.  A case under Arms Act was registered at Special Cell, lodhi Colony and further investigation is underway.
