A Delhi University student was arrested on Sunday evening for allegedly extorting money and blackmailing a woman student of the university. The accused, identified as Arvind Malik, resides in Rohini area and is pursuing a correspondence course at DU. The victim, a French department student, was being blackmailed by the accused on the pretext of uploading her obscene pictures over the Internet. Malik had demanded a sum of Rs2 lakh from her. Police officials claimed that all the pictures, which were found on the mobile phone of the accused, were morphed.

The victim informed the police and following her complaint a case was registered at Maurice Nagar police station. The victim told the police that she met Malik on a social networking site around three months ago. Malik posed as Rajiv, an employee of a private bank in Mumbai. “The girl claimed she met the victim a few times where he clicked pictures of both of them together. He later started blackmailing her for money,” said a police official. He further added that the victim later stopped showing interest in him and avoided him following which he started stalking her and blackmailed her.

A trap was laid and the accused was called by the victim to collect the money. The moment he accepted the money, police officials arrested him and seized the pictures from the accused. Further investigations are underway.
