A Delhi Police constable was shot at by a security guard deployed at All India Radio’s (AIR) office in North Delhi’s Timarpur area after his car rammed into the office gate in the wee hours of Monday. The Constable, identified as Ankit Kumar, and his friend Prashant were in Maruti Swift car which rammed into the gate. Both were allegedly in an inebriated state.
According to sources, the speed of the car was such that the car crashed the locked gate of the Mall Road AIR building and entered the premises. The Nagaland Police personnel, who was manning the gate, opened fire fearing a terrorist attack and one of the bullets hit the constable. Prashant, immediately came out and fought with the security guard for opening fire but after realizing that his friend was bleeding he rushed him to a nearby hospital where he is recuperating. “Kumar was driving in an inebriated condition. He received a bullet on the left side of his chest. His condition is now stable,” said a police officer.
Police have also questioned the security guard and other persons who witnessed the incident. “We are also examining whether the security guard could have avoided opening fire and endangering a person’s life,” the officer said, adding the case is being probed from all possible angles. A case under relevant Sections was registered at the Timarpur police station and further investigations are on.
