The Fire Service Week organised by the fire service department was started formally here on Friday.
During the week which will be observed till April 20, the department will spread public awareness on fires and fire extinguishing. Officials said that it was on April 14, 1944 that a ship in the Mumbai docks caught fire which resulted in the death of 66 fire brigade men and officers. The fire service week is observed by the fire service department every year in the memory of those who lost their lives in that blaze. The department will conduct a public awareness campaign on fires and also conduct a mock drill during the week. On the first day of the fire safety week on Friday, the fire service men and officers paid homage to those who had died in the fire during 1944.
