Dry spell would continue for a couple of days in Uttarakhand before another spell of rain comes to give relief to the people from the sultry heat. Meanwhile, the weathermen say that the advent of monsoon in the State would be a bit delayed this season as it would hit Kerala almost a week later than what is scheduled. They say that monsoon would finally arrive in Uttarakhand in the last week of June.

Uttarakhand Metrological Centre director Bikram Singh on Wednesday said that though normally monsoon comes on June 1 this time it is still a little away. Earlier, the Indian Meteorological Department had forecast the arrival of monsoon in Kerala on June 7. “However, no further information has been given by IMD regarding arrival of monsoon in Kerala,” Singh said, adding that monsoon arriving in Kerala a week or so later, things in other states, including Uttarakhand, would be correspondingly delayed.

“Normally, monsoon arrives in the state on June 22. However, this season, it is likely to arrive in the last week of this month. The rains that the state would have in the coming days are not monsoon rains.  Western disturbances might trigger a few spells of rains across the state before the advent of monsoon. The   higher reaches of the state are likely to receive more rains than the plains,” he said.

The Met office has forecast light rain/thunderstorm in higher reaches of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Pithoragarh districts. However, dry weather would prevail in the rest of Uttarakhand till June 3.

Singh further informed that the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 36.2ºC (normal) and 22ºC (normal) in Dehradun while it was 26.2ºC (two degree below the normal) and 13.0ºC (normal) in Mukteshwar, 25.6ºC (normal) and 15.8ºC (normal) in Tehri and 36.5ºC (one degree below the normal) and 23.3ºC (one degree above the normal) in Pantnagar on Wednesday.

The weather forecast for Dehradun for Thursday is mainly clear to partly cloudy sky. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36ºC and 23ºC respectively in Dehradun on Thursday.
