The Mahant Indiresh Hospital here has claimed that its anaesthetist Dr Gaurav Pathak has made an improvised intubation box for the protection of doctors and healthcare workers fighting against covid-19.
The procedure of intubation involves placing a plastic tube through the mouth into the trachea (windpipe) of patients and during this process the doctors are exposed to the infection. Intubation is performed in critically ill patients having respiratory problems and they are placed on a ventilator. Intubation is also performed commonly in the operation theatres for safely anaesthetizing a patient for surgery. Termed ‘Kavach’ this box would provide maximal safety to the doctors and healthcare workers involved during an intubation procedure in the ICU, Operation Theatre (OT) or in an emergency room.
Dr Pathak claims that the improvised intubation box invented by him has several new and modern features. The box is designed in such a way that it is made of a three millimeters thick acrylic sheet as a result of which the box is light on weight and strong enough to maintain its structure so as can be used and transported very easily with no fear of breakage unlike glass. He claimed that this intubation box can presumably replace PPE kits in view of protection at the time of intubation. He informed that in comparison with PPE kits, this ‘Kavach’ can be used multiple times and thus ease monetary expenditures in the fight against covid-19. A patent for Kavach has been filed by Dr Pathak .
