Cong flays State, Centre for farmer's suicide

PNS

Following the latest suicide by a farmer burdened by loan in the State, the Congress has alleged that both the Central and State Governments are doing little more than making hollow statements when it comes to addressing the problems being faced by farmers.

A Congress delegation is likely to approach the Raj Bhawan on Monday and submit a memorandum to the Governor on the issue of farmer suicides.

Addressing the media at the Congress Bhawan, the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Pritam Singh said that so far nine farmers had committed suicide in Uttarakhand.

However, both the central and State Governments had not yet done anything concrete to improve the lot of farmers who are being pushed by desperation to take such extreme steps. A PCC delegation is slated to visit the Raj Bhawan and submit a memorandum on Monday regarding the farmer suicides in the state. Referring to the Tharali Vidhan Sabha bypolls, the PCC chief said that the Congress candidate would win the by-election considering the support of the people being received by the party and its candidate.

He further opined that the people had lost faith in the Bharatiya Janata Party.
