Separate SGPC for Haryana: SAD seeks Central intervention

PNS

Maintaining that Haryana government’s move to create separate body to manage Sikh shrines in the State was “direct interference in Sikh affairs”, the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab on Tuesday sought Centre’s ‘immediate intervention’ to check the “unconstitutional and anti-Sikh move”.

“This unwarranted action of the Haryana Government has led to constitutional crisis due to which immediate need of the hour is that the Union Government must intervene in the matter,” states SAD legisla-tive Party’s resolution passed unanimously in its meeting. It maintained that the Congress’s step was aimed at creating fissures in the Sikh panth thereby weakening its religious and political power. “It is a direct assault on the Sikh psyche,” it added.

SAD legislative Party opined that this move of the Haryana Government has posed a serious challenge to the communal harmony, peace and amity in the region. The party was also of the opinion that by constituting a separate committee, Haryana government has shown grave disrespect to the mandate given by the Sikhs during the polls of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhan-dak Committee (SGPC).

“SGPC polls were fought on the issue of separate committee in Haryana and the Sikh voters of the State trounced all protagonists of this committee and had given a clear cut mandate against any such move by ensuring the victory of SAD candidates on all the 11 seats,” it added.
