PNS

Sea waves have swept away Puri beach near the Swargadwar in Puri recently. The coastal people are facing many problems due to natural disasters like cyclones and sea beach erosion, etc.

The natural calamities have been affecting tourism of the State and day-to-day life of the people. Concerned over the issue, the Orissa Environmental Society (OES) organised a seminar on the reasons of erosion of the Odisha coastline and about its eradications on Sunday.

The speakers said 36.8 per cent of 530-km-long coastlines are erosion-prone areas. The coastal areas of Gopalpur, Puri, Konark-Chandrabhaga-Ramachandi and Devi river mouth at Astarang, etc., are coming under such areas.

The speakers laid importance on observation, research and long-term planning for coastline protection.

OES vice-president Dr BM Farooque chaired the meeting. Former Geological Survey of India Additional DG Girija Prasad Mohapatra was present as chief speaker. Prof Debananda Beura also spoke, among others.

Dr lala AK Singh gave welcome address. OES secretary Dr Jayakrishna Panigrahi spoke on the importance of the topic.
