Organisational policies need to be culturally compatible, and business managers should develop cultural intelligence for better adaptability and results in the present era of globalisation,” said Nalco CMD Dr Tapan Kumar Chand on Thursday.

He was addressing the inaugural session of an international conference on ‘Cross Cultural Dimensions of Management: Issues and Challenges in the Era of Globalisation’ at the Berhampur University. The two-day UGC-sponsored conference is being organised by the university’s Department of Business Administration.

Pointing out major cross-cultural dimensions like Individualism vs. Collectivism, Risk-taking vs. Risk-aversion, Competition vs. Collaboration, Structural Proximity vs. Structural Distance, Time Past vs. Time Future, Dr Chand advised the present-day action managers to thoroughly understand cultural dimensions to sidestep the pitfalls of inter-cultural miscommunication. One of the key attributes of the success of the Nalco is its egalitarian culture, he added.

The conference was inaugurated by State Higher Education and Science & Technology Minister Dr Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy. University Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajendra Prasad Das delivered the welcome address and introduced the theme of the conference. Professors from Bangladesh, Japan and other countries also addressed the conference.
