During the last 30 years of my active association with astrology, I came in direct contact with two persons having had near death, out of body experiences. In one such case, the person, at the age of 14, realised that he was hovering over his own motionless body lying on ground. He could clearly see his near and dear ones wailing and mourning over his untimely death, but by himself could not relate to them. He could see people making arrangement for his funeral. Meanwhile, his family Guru arrived and touched the forehead, and the immobile body regained consciousness.
In another case, the person during his childhood days somehow lost control while swimming in the river Ganges, and was drowning. He found himself being pulled into a tunnel with enormous light. He could see and hear people on the river bank shouting, calling for help, but he by himself could not speak or anyway relate to them. He then saw somebody dive into the river, caught hold of his hair, pulled him out, and he was back to senses.
Osho, has shared his own experience in his autobiography. While meditating atop the branch of a tree in his university campus, he lost his balance and saw his body falling down and then lying down on ground. He was not able to enter his body again. Coincidentally, a passerby woman who saw him falling came close to the body and rubbed the forehead portion between his two eyes — the intelligence centre — and his spirit was back in the body.
Added to above illustrations is a scientific study of those having had near death experiences by a Nobel laureate neurologist, John Eccles. The study suggests that “human consciousness” is not dependent on gross-body for its existence, although it uses the body as a vehicle for its operations. And remember, mind is nothing but a projection of the ‘force of consciousness,’ in fact a co-runner.
What comes out of the above illustrations is that there is a seer distinct from the gross-body, which has an existence independent of the latter.
What does this finding mean to us in practical termsIJ Remember, our perceptions define how we are to act, react, and respond in life, which is subject to our level of consciousness. As we raise our levels of consciousness, by improving our awareness, our scope of vision expands. Consequently, our perspective changes, and with that the quality of our perception and thereby our approach does also become more reasoned and realistic. If somehow, we could raise our level of consciousness to that of the ‘true seer’ — the force of consciousness — and look at things standing on that plane, its wholesome and omniscient power shall lead us through. We may then realise that one could fly like a free bird unhindered, who would know no limits, because a holistic picture will be in hand. And life will turn into a beautiful experience. How to go about it, calls for seeking a qualified guru, who may show the way, as it is not advisable to pursue the process unguided.
Even if we raise ourselves just above the gross level of consciousness, which remains the state of ordinary mortals, life will qualitatively turn better. At gross level of consciousness, one remains trapped into tempting influences of the seeming world, which is delusionary. It cannot bring happiness. For, passionately chasing them, one fails to explore what lies beyond. Consequently, often people miss out on still better options available. In the process larger truths take a back seat, and naturally to one’s detriment, whereby one fails to view things in the right perspective due.
A gentleman, now in late 50s, has not been able to find a suitable partner as yet. The reason: He remains stuck in unsavoury reminiscences of his early childhood days, witnessing continued squabble between his parents. That got imprinted deep in his sub-conscious, which still continues to play the devil. The sense of fear and insecurity that got instilled in his mind, especially in personal relationship matters, keeps outplaying while relating to a female friend. That has made him suspicious, inhibitive and an escapist, whereby he gets stuck to few negatives in any girl, overlooking all the positives. The Sun placed adverse to Saturn, read together with Moon locking horns with Neptune, point to above indications. When confronted with this analysis, the man readily agreed. He does not realise that what happened with his parents cannot be the defining principles of his life. He needs to rise above.
