Picking up threads from the previous issue, a look into the findings of Dr Brian Weiss, a scientifically trained psychiatrist would be relevant. He developed the process of ‘past life regression’, using hypnotherapy technique, applying which, he established a definite connect between past life memories and the behavioural pattern during the ongoing life.
Here again, a look into the divergent conduct of twins becomes imperative. Twins carry the same ancestry, and are also brought up under similar conditions. What then explains the difference between their mental-dispensation, each reflecting individual-specific likes, dislikes, habits and attitudesIJ Would it not suggest carry-over effects of past birth reminiscences as arrived at by Dr WeissIJ
Now the next question: “From where has life come into beingIJ” Darwin suggested the theory of evolution through the natural selection process. But that remains a partial theory. For, it is limited to species in existence on earth, and fails to throw any hint on where from life originated.
This question has been answered in the most simplistic way in The Bhagavad Gita and Kathopanishad through the imagery of an inverted ‘Asvat tree’ — roots above, having trunk, branches, and the leaves hanging downward. This is suggestive of life-system emanating from some primal-source lying somewhere in unknown dimension, which would also be the effective cause of creation. Continuum between the source and the manifest is also evident.
It may not be easy for a modern man having a complex thought process, and invariably suspicious of oriental wisdom, be contented just with the above simile. They may be inclined to look for food for thought framed in scientific terms. A reference back to the energy-construct of the universe as discussed in the previous issue, read together with the theory established by Fred Hoyle, a renowned Astro-physicist and his team may throw further light. They have proved that “Carbon and most of familiar chemical elements are produced in the stars and ejected in stellar explosions. If that be not true, there would neither be carbon in the universe, nor any of the elements we see around us. What is more, life as we see it would not exist.”
To sum up, and even true to Vedantic version of creation, scientific perception would suggest that the creation chain begins its course from the primal-source somewhere in unidentifiable dimension. In this scheme of things, the whole creative order is set into a unified unitary organism, which further validates continuum in time and space. For, going by this hypothesis, any individual existence separated from the whole is simply inconceivable.
let us now take up the question: From where do so many souls arrive to support the ever expanding populationIJ Be it known that ‘Soul’ is not to be seen as individualised equipment. It is an eternal and omnipresent field of consciousness, which becomes manifested when a suitable energy platform is available to operate upon. Depending on varying energy-platforms on which different species stand, consciousness accordingly reflect to the level they are suited for. For instance, it allows touch sense to trees; sense of taste gets added to earthworm; ants enjoy smelling sense as well; the bees enjoy all but hearing sense. Human beings and some of the higher animals enjoy the privilege of all the five senses. So, the infinite domain of field of consciousness can serve as many lives as would grow in this universe.
We now come to the question whether mind remains functional even after death. To understand the mechanism, analogy needs to be drawn with the functioning of a computer. Computer has two types of memories: Random and permanent. Permanent memory is stored in the hard disk. If you take out the hard disk from one computer and fit it into another, the in-store programmes could be again played upon. But it will not function unless aided by the random memory. In human mechanism, the random memory comes with the availability of a gross-body platform.
In case of human beings, the eternal and self-intelligent ‘force of consciousness’ carries forward the memory imprints from one life to another in auto-pilot mode, retaining memory imprints pertaining to the implications of cause-effect chain. That is how nature is designed.
Accordingly, life needs to be seen in continuation, as ‘the force of consciousness’, which holds the key to life, does not seize to exist even after death. And so, invariably, the law of causation of Karma does not get exhausted in one life. It could, provided we consciously work towards that end as explained in the ‘Can we shape our destinyIJ’ series.
