Old attitudes, habits die hard

Published on:

A lady hassled by continued idiosyncrasies of her husband is keen to know if some belief-driven puja could induce a sense of civility and sanity in the man’s mind. I am afraid, if someone’s inner realm of mind could be invaded so easily through invocation of some mantra by spending on some pundits, a large majority would have effortlessly secured a peaceful, pleasurable life with ease and comfort. Truth of life, however, remains that people are becoming more and more intolerant, impatient, and self-centric day-by-day and literally the whole world is in a state of chaos. Hardly anybody is at peace with the self and the environment.

Remember, habits die hard. For, the seeds of habits and attitudes are firmly laid down in the deep realm of one’s mind, coming as they may with cause-effect chain carried over from the past, which holds the key to how one would conduct in day-to-day life. And invariably, the seeds are so firmly grounded that it’s impossible to uproot them easily. They can, however, be outwitted through conscious efforts. But should we ever lose our alert, they could raise their head again. And, only a conscious and tireless effort made towards that end in all sincerity for a long stretch of time, could bring about the desired change. In fact, given our power of freewill, which is duly aided by faculty of discriminate intelligence, we could identify, acknowledge, and address our inherent frailties. But it’s difficult to believe that any external intervention would do any good.

The process, however, involves a long drawn psychological struggle running through stages. It’s pertinent to note here that our life is premised on three nature driven macro-cosmic modes of energies, each imbued with specific guna (attribute) in psychological perspective — Sata, Rajasa, and Tamasa. Sata finds reflection as positive virtues — purity, righteousness, a positive attitude, and meaningful karma. Rajasa brings in desire and sense of attachment. Tamasa reflects inertia, indolence, ignorance, anger, jealousy, negative mindset, and directionless karma. The particular mix of the three in a being, with one or the other prominently displayed, defines the unique character of each being.

The obvious calling would be to raise oneself to the level of Sata. In course of this exercise the first course of struggle is between Tamasa and Rajasa. Rajasa, even though desire driven, but being purposeful is any day superior to Tamasa, and so eventually wins. Paramhansa Yogananda in his book Arjun talks to God terms this phase of struggle belonging to what we may call Kurukshetra. Having firmed up the Rajasa element, one then gets tempted to add value and quality to one’s profile. With that begins the next course of pushes and pulls between Rajasa and Sata. This field of struggle is termed as Dharmakshetra-Kurukshetra. Having firmed up Sata, one is tempted to evolve further by bringing the three in perfect equipoise. Even during this phase, which may be characterised as Dharmakshetra, one becomes subject to pushes and pulls caused by the indwelling samskara. So should one lose alert at any stage, the habit tendencies shall try to overtake one’s thought frame.

In the above context, the lady’s husband’s chart makes out an interesting reading. The Sun was over the head with intelligence signifying Mercury. That makes out a very intelligent person who would be in public glare for both right and wrong reasons. For, on one hand they are aspected by wisdom oriented and benevolent Jupiter for all his good luck and quick grasp. The Sun, simultaneously locks horns with Uranus. That makes out an unconventional person who would know no norms, shall be tactless and self-willed. He may not hesitate, locking horns with anybody and everybody who do not prove true to his whims and fancies.

Venus conjunct Mars, and also favourably aligned to Uranus point to the man playing with big money. But Venus again ill-disposed off to mischievous Neptune, implies that he may not hesitate applying unethical means to amass wealth. That also makes him susceptible to indulgences.

Mind signifying Moon occupying the fiery and movable sign Aries, locking horns with lagna lord Saturn, Neptune, and Mars make out a temperamental person, known for his erratic behaviour and unpredictable mood-swings. As a consequence, he neither could remain at peace with the self nor would allow peace to others, and hence his wife’s woes.

The problems could be resolved only when the man himself wakes up to the cause.
