Matter of indiscretion

Published on:

To sum up from the previous issue, the primary cause of anger is to be found in one’s individual-specific samskara. For, it sets the frame of one’s behavioural-trends. This is not to suggest that external factors would not excite anger. We, therefore, cannot afford to exclude it from our scope of study. Remember, what we encounter in life in the seeming world, good or bad, small or big, all find space in our memories and remain in store live. Unless otherwise these memory imprints are resolved and made dysfunctional from time to time, they continue to influence our behaviour for long.

Truth of life is that we are often confronted with a lot of unsavoury experiences. For, we inhabit a world where every individual is born unique, each carrying varying perceptive and intellectual abilities.  Added to this is a sense of dual-perception that drives every individual mind. As a consequence, each individual mind, by itself, is potent enough to excite conflicting thoughts. The world, thus, remains a natural breeding ground of conflicting orientation and interests, potent enough to excite anger — an instinctive human emotion.

To understand why anger is to be termed as an instinctive human emotion, a brief run into the construct and flow chart of human mind becomes imperative. Mind, going by the Indian philosophic perception, is primarily driven by chitta with the help of three functional aids — buddhi, ahamkar, and manas — all set into an interdependent mechanism. Chitta, the force of consciousness holds the key to our dynamic existence with all its power of knowing and actions.  Buddhi enjoins upon us with the faculty to dispassionately discriminate upon a subject and take a sensible stand. Ahamkar, which brings in a sense of ‘I’, also makes us explore options available and commit to a task. Manas is the sense-driven mind which, acting from the front, is supposed to collect field data and make it available to buddhi for due discrimination, and then act upon them as directed. Manas is also capable of instinctively responding or reacting to a situation by itself.

If the three functional constituents of one’s mind work in perfect coordination, as designed, one would be able to attend to the callings of life intelligently. The probability of successfully conducting oneself with ease and comfort would then be naturally high. The irony, however, is that given the preconditioning of mind, as fallout of individual-specific samskara, often ahamkara plays the devil. It makes one get stuck to seeming realities, not allowing buddhi doing due diligence before taking the final call. Naturally, if the discriminatory faculty is left aside, one would react and respond instinctively in the typical animalistic way, and with obvious consequences. It is this factor that accounts for all human indiscretions, including anger.

What further compounds to human indiscretions is heightened activity of mind beyond the scope of its usual absorption capacity.  Constantly surfing through various electronic gadgets, every aspirational mind loads itself with such volume of information that they are hardly left with the space and time necessary to process them objectively. As a consequence, most people get tempted to react instinctively than sensibly. The result is there for all to see. The level of impatience, intolerance and anger is growing out of proportion. All unseemly conduct within four walls of house and in public, incidents of road rage and group violence, become a natural corollary. In fact, almost the whole of world is in a state of chaos as of now.

Yet, whatever be the external provocations, how one’s mind would respond vary from person to person. Naturally, the one who is able to ensure integrated use of all the coordinates of mind would behave sensibly than others. A case in point is that of a young man who, more often than not, is subject to fits of anger. WhyIJ In this respect, astrology can work as an effective diagnostic tool pointing to the inherent traits that drive them through. In this case, intelligence-signifying Mercury locked in adverse formation with mischievous Neptune needs to be marked, which is responsible for all his indiscrete instinctive actions. More so, because fiery Mars conjunct expansive Jupiter are both placed adverse to mind-signifier Moon and Uranus. For, it brings in swaggering ego out of touch with ground reality, making him naïve, temperamental, moody, irritable, aggressive and erratic. Had his inherent trends been identified in time for necessary corrections, his conduct would have been relatively more sensible.
