Summing up the discussion in the two previous issues, it comes out that it is desirable to seek a guru/mentor, who may lead us through in our quest to restore orderly functioning of mind. The other day, a lady having gone through my piece asked me: “Is having a guru mandatoryIJ Are we not ourselves empowered to carry forward the task in one’s own rightIJ”
Well, potentially empowered though, but our clouded mind limits it from spontaneously outflowing to its optimum best. And as already explained in the previous issues, the key to coming out of our mental-bind is awareness, and hence the need of a guru. For, you need someone who may educate you, and then lead you through a step-by-step process to remove the so-called hardened dirt layer in your mind. It needs to be appreciated that the one who is adept in the process, could lead you through. This person could do on the strength of experiences gained while pursuing the process oneself. If you could exploit your full human potential, what would be the need to undergo a corrective processIJ
Remember, at the end of the day, it is only you who has to take the call, and exploit own inlaid tools to address the indwelling infirmities, of course as guided by guru. Following which, over a course of time orderly functioning of mind gets restored, whereafter it reveals its immense power unfettered. The guru doesn’t do any miracle, he just guides you through.
The paradox, however, is that even after submitting to a process as guided by guru, the task is not easy. For, desires and emotions keep persisting in mind. They keep the mind fragmented, not allowing remaining focused to the task in hand. It does not allow the sense of alert needed to invoke our faculty of discriminate intelligence either, vital to rightfully steer life.
It is often said that one needs to get over desires to secure purity of mind — a clear mind worth projecting its full potential. But I have a question: Can a being born with a lack in the sense of fullness, and thereby want, get rid of desireIJ Here again, remember that every being is made out of the three nature driven fundamental forces — Sattva, Rajasa, and Tamasa. Out of them, it is the Rajasa element which serves as activating force, intrinsic to which is the sense of desire. It is again the desire which offers you something to look forward, and also motivates you to work towards that end. So, all actions on our part, good or bad, are desire driven. So, ordinarily, it is difficult to control desire. The question now is to how to get over this dilemmaIJ
A true guru makes you exploit the sense of desire itself, which is to be directed towards getting better empowered. Once you are able to unfold mind-power to its optimum best, in the first place, you may be able to discriminate between “what you want and what is right,” and make right choices. Second, when you train your mind towards the aspired destination, you will be able to put in your qualitative whole to successfully achieve that end.
Here is the case of a highly ambitious gentleman, though armed with immense potential, became a victim of the vagaries of his own mind. He, therefore, suffered badly till his early 50s, before he came across a guru. Following his advice in right earnest, his very thought process underwent a positive turn over a period of time.
look at his astrological markers. The Sun favourably aligned to intellectually ordained Uranus points to being a genius. For, it arms him with an insightful, inventive, and innovative mind. Wisdom signifying Jupiter is conjunct mind indicator Moon, and also favourably aligned to intelligence signifying Mercury. That speaks loud of clarity in vision and thought, as well as excellent communicative skill.
His inherent infirmities, however, played spoilsport with the above positives. Mercury ill-disposed to restive Rahu made his mind restless. This, read together with fiery Aries lagna, made him act impulsively on instinctive judgment, without applying proper forethought. So, he failed to make right choices and often ended up distraught. Venus ill-disposed off to both the Sun and Moon, accounts for his volatile emotionality. That made him too much unnerved even on trivial issues, which he would stretch beyond their due, thus losing track of priority preferences.
Now that he has reformed himself, his creative potential has brought in a new meaning to life.
