A year-old tigress was found dead in the Gauharganj range of the Ratapani Tiger Reserve in the Raisen district on Saturday.The feline is said to have been run over by an unidentified vehicle.
The carcass was discovered by passers-by who informed forest officials.
According to forest officials, the incident is estimated to have occurred between 12 AM and 1 AM. Information was received about the death of the tigress due to a collision with an unidentified vehicle on NH-45, the Gauharganj-Jabalpur Highway.At 1:15 AM, the night patrol team of Obedullaganj Forest Division reported the incident to senior officials.
Subsequently, the Range Officers of Bineka and Gauharganj, along with their staff, reached the site. Barricades were placed around the tigress to secure the body.
At 7 AM, forest officials, veterinarian Dr Amit Ode, Wildlife Conservation Trust functionaries, and National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) representatives reached the spot and supervised procedures in accordance with NTCA guidelines.
The team, with the help of a dog squad, searched the surrounding area. A post-mortem was conducted, and forensic samples were collected before the cremation of the tigress. A case has been registered under the Forest Act.
