XITE Gamharia honored the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples with a vibrant celebration that showcased the rich cultural heritage of Jharkhand’s indigenous communities. The event, meticulously organized by the Department of English in collaboration with the Cultural Club, Sarjan (Literary Club), and the Branding & Communication Department, was a tribute to the unique traditions, values, and contributions of the region’s tribal populations.
The program began with a solemn Invocation of Ancestors, a traditional ceremony highlighting the deep connection to indigenous roots. This was followed by an introductory speech from Enock Topno, who stressed the significance of preserving indigenous cultures, particularly in Jharkhand, where the tribal population forms a crucial part of the state’s identity. Fr. Ritesh Edwin Dungdung, SJ, welcomed the attendees, expressing gratitude and reiterating XITE Gamharia’s commitment to the preservation and promotion of indigenous cultural heritage.
Sarjan – The Literary Club – led a captivating storytelling session that explored the rich traditions and moral values of Jharkhand's tribes, offering timeless lessons from indigenous wisdom. This was complemented by a carefully curated movie screening by TSF, which provided insights into the struggles and achievements of indigenous peoples, further enriching the audience’s understanding.
Musical performances by Manual brought indigenous culture to life, resonating with the audience and adding depth to the celebration. The event's highlight was a dynamic Ramp Walk where students creatively represented various aspects of Jharkhand’s tribal culture, from traditional Santhali musical instruments to agricultural practices and sacred rituals. Gopal, a first-year BA Economics student, was awarded first prize for his exceptional portrayal of sacred worship in Jaher, while other participants were recognized for their vibrant presentations.
The day concluded with a Prize Distribution ceremony, a Vote of Thanks by Prof. Akinchan Xaxa, and a move to the ground floor where attendees enjoyed traditional food stalls and participated in a Chain Dance. The food stalls featured indigenous cuisines, offering a taste of Jharkhand’s culinary traditions, while the Chain Dance brought everyone together in a joyous expression of unity and cultural pride.
Special guests Suraj Gilua, Manager, and Nitish Kumar, Consultant from Tata Steel Foundation, graced the event, underscoring the significance of such celebrations in fostering understanding and respect for indigenous cultures. The event saw enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and non-teaching staff, making it a true community celebration and a resounding success.
