State Assembly gets 12 new women legislators

A total of 128 female candidates hailing from various political parties were in fray in the Jharkhand Assembly elections 2024.  Out of all the women candidates 12 have managed to clinch a seat.

The National Democratic Alliance led by the Bharatiya Janta Party gave tickets to 14 women candidates while the INDIA bloc fielded 12. Splitting it up party-wise, the BJP issued tickets to 12 women, AJSU had fielded two and the Congress had named six women candidates. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) fielded five women candidates while the RJD had one woman contesting the elections.

The BJP had announced women candidates for the seats of Jamtara, Koderma, Gandey, Sindri, Nirsa, Jharia, Potka, Jamshedpur East, Chaibasa, Jagannathpur and Chhatarpur while the Congress had its contenders from the constituencies of Mahagama, Jharia, Barkagaon, Mandar, Pakur, Ramgarh and Barkagaon.

Jharkhand Multi Morcha’s fresh face 39- year old Kalpana Soren who spearheaded the party’s election campaign and conducted over 400 rallies addressing voter concern and rallying support for the party, contested the elections from the constituency of Gandey. In her political debut, Soren got a total of 119372 votes marking her victory with 17142 votes against Muniya Devi from the BJP.

Another JMM candidate from Jama Lois Marandi (59) managed to clinch a total of 76424 and won with a margin of 5738 defeating her BJP counterpart Suresh Mahto.

JMM was represented by 50- year old Sabita Mahto from Ichagarh who received a total of 77552 votes and declared her win with 26523 votes against her challenger Hare Lal Mahto fielded by the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU).

On the other hand, the Bhartiya Janta Party’s 43- year old Ragini Singh who contested the elections from Jharia got a total of 87892 votes overpowering her opponent Purnima Niraj Singh of the Congress and has won by a margin of 14511.

BJP’s young candidate 30- year old Purnima Sahu won against her Congress rival Ajoy Kumar from Jamshedpur East. Winning with a margin of 42871 votes, Sahu managed to garner a total of 107191 votes from her constituency.

Another BJP face Manju Kumari (45) won the seat of Jamua against JMM’s Kedar Hazra. The former won with a margin of 32631 votes by receiving a total of 117532 votes while the latter got 84901 votes.

From Koderma, Dr Neera Yadav, fighting on a BJP ticket received as many as 86734 votes as against her Rashtriya Janta Dal counterpart who got 80919 votes. Yadav won by 5815 votes.

In Pakur, Congress candidate Nisat Alam (53) received a total of 155827 votes and clinched victory with a margin of 86029 votes defeating her competitor Azhar Islam.

From Ramgarh, another Congress contender 39- year old Mamta Devi won with a margin of 6790 leaving behind her AJSU counterpart Sunita Choudhary. Devi received a total of 89818 votes as against Choudhary who got 83028 votes.

The Congress had fielded 40- year old Shwettaa Singh from the constituency of Bokaro who received about 133438 votes and won with a margin of 7207 votes. BJP from this constituency had given a ticket to Biranchi Narayan.

From Mahagama, 49- year old Deepika Singh Pandey of the Congress defeated her opponent Ashok Kumar from the BJP with a margin of 18194 votes. Singh received a total of 112806 votes while Kumar got 94612.

Fighting on the Congress ticket 31- year old Shilpi Neha Tirkey won the Mandar seat by a whopping margin of 22803 votes. Tirkey got as many as 135936 votes defeated her rival Sunny Toppo from the BJP who got 113133 votes.
