Recognition of Shaheed Nirmal Mahato Medical College and hospital (SNMMCH) appears to be at stake owing to shortage of teachers, especially professors here.
Principal Dr. Jyoti Ranjan while admitting this said that we have a huge shortage of professors here. Out of a total of 33 sanctioned posts of professors in this medical college only 8 professors are working and the remaining 25 posts are vacant for a long time . He admitted that they face difficulties in imparting quality medical education to students here owing to the absence of professors despite attempts of special special care taken to ensure that studies are not affected due to the absence of professors.
It's worth mentioning that the National Medical Commission ( NMC) increased MBBS seats from 50 to 100 after a lot of efforts and has allowed PG teaching in two departments but shortage of professors has come up as a hindrance in this. The NMC has approved 6 seats in medicine and 3 seats in orthopedics.
Teachers here said If we continue to struggle with shortage of professors, then in a year or two NMC can withdraw PG seats and also put curb on UG seats.at present out of the total 100 seats, 83 are in state quota while 15 seats are from the all India quota, while there are two seats for central nominees.
Regarding the shortage of professors, teachers here said as the promotion process is stalled here in Jharkhand it's not only this but all the medical colleges of the entire state are suffering. If the situation fails to improve it's likely that this medical college may face recognition or seat cuts.
