Punjab Govt to Introduce Sign Language in Vidhan Sabha for Hearing-Impaired Citizens

Tuesday, 24 September 2024 | PNS | Chandigarh

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at fostering inclusivity, the Punjab Government on Monday announced its plans to introduce sign language in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, ensuring that legislative proceedings are accessible to hearing-impaired citizens. The significant move, pending approval from the Speaker of the Assembly, marked a pivotal step towards integrating diverse communities into the democratic process.

The announcement was made by the state’s Social Security, Women and Child Development, and Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dr Baljit Kaur during the state-level celebration of International Sign Language Day in Patiala. Emphasizing the government's commitment to support marginalized groups, Dr Baljit stated that the initiative will empower hearing-impaired individuals to engage fully in legislative discussions and decisions that affect their lives.

In addition to legislative measures, the Punjab Police will also receive training in sign language—aimed at enhancing communication with individuals who have speech and hearing disabilities, ensuring that they receive the justice and support they deserve. Dr Baljit highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that it reflects the Punjab Government's broader mission to uplift disadvantaged communities under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

“According to natural law, everyone has some form of disability, and it’s not limited to a particular group,” Dr Baljit said, while underscoring the need to recognize the potential of individuals who face communication challenges, urging society to nurture their talents. “Lacking physical abilities does not define a person’s worth; rather, being mentally restrained is the true limitation,” she added.

She encouraged children with hearing and speech disabilities to view sign language as a gateway to new opportunities, empowering them to pursue their dreams without hindrance.
