DUSU polls 2024: Different student outfits campaign in various DU colleges ahead of elections

Ahead of Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) polls slated to be held on September 27, different student outfits including RSS’ Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Congress’ National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Monday engaged in campaigning in various colleges of the university.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Chief Election Officer (CEO) for the DUSU polls issued a notice directing all candidates to remove banners and posters bearing their names and ballot numbers from university premises within 24 hours.

CEO Satyapal Singh stated the election office is closely monitoring campaign activities, including the use of banners, posters, and vehicles during rallies and emphasised that all campaigning must adhere to the rules set by the Lyngdoh Committee, which provides guidelines for fair elections.

The notice, sent via email, warned that failure to remove the banners and posters within the given time would result in strict action. In the notification, candidates were also reminded to strictly follow the Code of Conduct, the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders, and the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 2007.

It added that any violations of these guidelines and acts could lead to disqualification and criminal penalties. Additionally, that notification noted that candidates are only permitted to use the designated "Walls of Democracy" within the campus for pasting handmade posters.

ABVP carried out their campaigning in various colleges in North Campus, including Shri Ram College of Commerce, Ramjas College, Khalsa College, Kirorimal college, and colleges in off campus including Dyal Singh College, College of Vocational Studies.

More than 5000 students affiliated with ABVP are campaigning in all 52 colleges for the DUSU election and spreading awareness by distributing the ABVP manifesto to the students talking about the holistic development of Delhi University.

ABVP Delhi Secretary Harsh Attri stated, “DUSU election is a celebration of democracy at the students' level. All students should participate in the voting process. If ABVP wins the DUSU election this year, we will work on the infrastructural development of Delhi University by building new hostels, new libraries, etc and other Post Covid issues faced by the students.”

Further, NSUI organized a special program for Purvanchal students at Delhi University which witnessed the participation of hundreds of enthusiastic students from Purvanchal. Addressing the gathering, NSUI National President Varun Choudhary highlighted his deep connection with the Purvanchal region.

"I have a personal bond with Purvanchal as I was once the in-charge of NSUI Purvanchal. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the people of Purvanchal voted for jobs and change.

Similarly, I believe students from Purvanchal have a huge role to play in the upcoming DUSU elections and will vote for NSUI on the same lines – for jobs, better education, and to reject ABVP,” Varun said, adding that he is sure that they will secure a decisive victory in the DUSU elections, winning all four seats by 4-0.

NSUI National Incharge Kanhaiya Kumar, Congress’ Social Media Chairperson Supriya Shrinate, and Former NSUI President Nadeem Javed also participated in the event.
