Dengue cases surge, Positive cases cross 270

Wednesday, 25 September 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

The city is witnessing a troubling spike in dengue fever cases, with the total number of confirmed infections surpassing 270 in the Kolhan region, including 190 cases reported in East Singhbhum district alone. Health officials are sounding the alarm as the monsoon season, paired with stagnant water in many areas, has led to a surge in the population of Aedes mosquitoes, the primary carriers of the dengue virus.

“ In response to the growing number of cases, the district health department and local authorities have ramped up efforts to combat the outbreak. A comprehensive awareness campaign is underway, urging residents to take preventive measures such as covering water containers, using mosquito repellents, and wearing protective clothing to reduce exposure to mosquito bites,” said an official.

The health department has also intensified surveillance in high-risk areas, launching fumigation drives aimed at eliminating mosquito breeding grounds. Medical facilities have been put on high alert, ensuring that there are sufficient resources, including hospital beds and medical supplies, to handle the influx of dengue patients.

Local community leaders, along with social organizations, are playing an active role in supporting these efforts. Clean-up drives to remove stagnant water from public areas are being organized, and mosquito nets and repellents are being distributed to the most vulnerable populations. These grassroots efforts are crucial in preventing further mosquito breeding and spreading awareness about the severity of the outbreak.

Despite these proactive steps, health officials acknowledge that the situation remains critical. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has already stretched healthcare resources, and the addition of a dengue outbreak has placed immense pressure on medical facilities in the region. Health experts are calling for heightened public cooperation, stressing the importance of preventive measures and early detection to prevent further spread of the virus.

Health authorities are advising residents to remain vigilant for symptoms of dengue, which include high fever, severe headaches, muscle and joint pain, rashes, and bleeding. Anyone experiencing these symptoms is urged to seek immediate medical care, as early treatment is essential in preventing severe complications.
