The word Vedic means knowledge or wisdom as it comes from the root word  'vid' which in Sanskrit, means 'to know'.

Jyot (light) and Isht (the worshipped one, God) combine to make the word 'jyotish'. Hence, Jyotish means 'True Light of God'.

Vedic Astrology, also called jyotish is an ancient Indian science which explains planetary positions and motions with respect to time and their effect on humans and other beings on earth.

Origin of Vedic Astrology

Astrological mentions are reflected in Atharva Veda which is a sacred Indian scripture  and documents hymns and incantations.  Going by the Indian archaeological records, the Vedic astrology dates to 5000 BCE.

A celestial sage, Parasara Muni authored Brhad Parasara Hora Shastra - a fundamental astrological compilation which is a discourse on astrology for individuals, for their daily lives.

As mentioned in his treatise, Rishi Parasara ji was a disciple of Brahma ji and Narada ji from whom he gained illumination in astrology.

Vedic Astrology is based on Vedangas which is one of the six supplements of Vedas. Adroit at Vedic astrology, Vashistha ji, Bhrigu ji and Garga ji were the ancient sages who predicted accurately.

Hora Sastra is the Sanskrit term for a treatise on time or astrology. From 'horo' comes the word 'horoscope' which was passed on to sage Maitreya. Later, it reached the middle east countries (Iran, Iraq), Greece, Rome and Egypt.
