185 new leprosy patients identified in East Singhbhum

Saturday, 07 December 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

A total of 185 new leprosy patients were identified during an intensive Leprosy Patient Search Campaign (LCDC) conducted across East Singhbhum between August 28 and September 13, 2024. The campaign, part of the National Leprosy Eradication Program (NLEP), aimed to identify undiagnosed cases and ensure timely treatment to prevent disability among leprosy-affected individuals.

The campaign involved a dedicated team of Saheya and male health workers who went door-to-door across the district to identify people suffering from leprosy. The identified patients were immediately provided with free Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT), a critical treatment that is available at all government health centers free of charge. Dr. Rajiv Lochan Mahato, District Leprosy Consultant, shared that the effort successfully identified these patients and ensured they began treatment without delay.

In addition to providing immediate medical care, the district has also been supporting new leprosy patients with food supplements. As part of the initiative, patients registered after April 1, 2024, are being given ₹500 per month for Paucibacillary (PB) patients and ₹1000 for Multibacillary (MB) patients. This financial aid, amounting to ₹3000 for PB patients and ₹6000 for MB patients, is being transferred directly to their bank accounts to support their nutritional needs during treatment.

To further enhance the skills of leprosy workers, a two-day training program was held for nodal medical officers and leprosy workers in the District Council Auditorium. The training provided detailed information on leprosy symptoms, types, treatment, and prevention methods. Experts such as Somshekhar Reddy, State Coordinator, and Dr. Gautam Kumar led the sessions, while District Leprosy Prevention Officer Dr. Mrityunjay Dhauriya emphasized the importance of early identification to prevent disabilities associated with the disease.

Somshekhar Reddy also shared insights on managing leprosy reactions, reconstructive surgery, and the importance of self-care and referrals to secondary centers. The program concluded with certificates being awarded to all participating medical officers and leprosy workers for their valuable contributions to the campaign.

The District Leprosy Prevention Office continues to play a crucial role in raising awareness and ensuring the timely treatment of leprosy cases, furthering the mission to eliminate the disease in East Singhbhum.
