No relief from rain mayhem for Delhiites

Heavy rain lashed Delhi-NCR for the second consecutive day on Saturday, causing waterlogging and traffic jams.

In Dwarka, two people sustained injuries due to the collapse of a wall of a school after a tree fell on it while a two-storey house collapsed in northwest Delhi’s Model Town area during heavy afternoon rain.

With the help of the local police and other rescue team members, three people were taken out of the rubble and sent to a nearby hospital. Two of them are in critical condition, the official said.

Waterlogging was reported in several places in East Delhi, South East Delhi and Central Delhi. The Public Works Department (PWD) said it received 20 complaints of waterlogging during the day, while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) received five complaints of similar nature as well as uprooting of trees.

The national Capital on Saturday recorded 20. 4 mm rainfall. Palam recorded 30.1 mm rainfall, Lodhi Road 20.6 mm and Ridge 22 mm rainfall on Saturday.

Choked drains led to waterlogging which in turn caused traffic bottlenecks, slow-moving traffic, and consequent traffic congestion. Rohtak Road, the highway that connects the city to Haryana, saw heavy jams in the wake of the rain. Kashmere Gate ISBT also witnessed heavy traffic jams.

Besides Nityanand Marg, Seelampur, Indralok, Rajouri Garden, Palam, Mehrauli-Badarpur road, Chirag Dilli, Laxmi Nagar, Kishan Ganj were also among the affected due to traffic jams and water logging.

The Delhi Police issued a traffic advisory in response to the disruptions. Traffic has been diverted at Ch Fateh Singh Marg due to waterlogging, shifting routes from Mall Road red light to Majnu Ka Tila. The traffic was also hampered on Old Kakrola Road, Najafgarh near Shyam Vihar Chowk, and Najafgarh-Nangloi Road due to potholes and collection of water, police said.

The weather department has predicted more rains in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had sounded an orange alert for many parts of Delhi-NCR, predicting light to moderate rain or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty wind (30-40 km/hour).

According to police, a tree got uprooted amid heavy rain in Dwarka’s Baba Haridas Nagar, and it fell on the wall of an MCD school, causing it to collapse. The two men, who were taking shelter, got trapped under the tree and the debris. They were rescued by locals and rushed to a hospital.

In another incident, a two-storey house collapsed in northwest Delhi’s Model Town area due to rain. The incident took place in Mahendru Enclave where the old house, which was being repaired, collapsed around 2.45 pm, police said. Three fire tenders have been deployed for the rescue operation, an official of the Delhi Fire Service said.
