CBI collects evidence from rape and murder scene

Within hours of  Calcutta High Court ordering a court-monitored probe by the CBI into the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case, the Central agency slueths on Wednesday reached Kolkata and took charge of the case. The CBI team from Delhi comprising medical and forensic experts  visited the place of the occurrence after lodging four FIRs and taking custody of the prime accused Sanjoy Das earlier arrested and grilled by the Kolkata Police. Two CBI officers had taken the case diary and other documents pertaining to the case from the Kolkata Police on Tuesday.

The officials visited and collected evidences from the seminar hall of the hospital's Department of Chest Medicine where the 31-year-old doctor was raped and murdered.  The CBI officials also reported to have directed the hospital authorities to stop the renovation work right at the place of occurrence sources said.

"The hospital administration was dislodging a wall separating the seminar hall reportedly to construct a rest room for the doctors which would have led to the tampering of the evidence so the authorities have been asked to stop the work," one of the agitators inside the hospital said.

The Bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanan had on Tuesday found serious lapses in the police investigation promptly handing over the case to the CBI.

The CBI's taking over of the case came almost in tandem with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee praising the police for "commendable work" in cracking the case. "The police have done commendable work … they have cracked the case and arrested the accused," Banerjee said adding she wanted to see the accused person get punished but she was equally against any innocent person getting implicated. "Remember the Dhananjay Chatterjee case … I don't want any innocent person to get punished … so I gave the best of officers to investigate the case and they did a good job."

Even as the medical staff including the resident doctors continued to strike work for the fifth day on Wednesday and women throughout the State planned to hit the streets in the midnight intervening August 14 and 15 seeking freedom for women, Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP and the Left for trying to politicize the issue to extract Bangladesh like dividends.

"There are some political hawks who instead of showing sympathy to the victim's family are trying to invoke a Bangladesh like situation in India so as to drive me out of power by force … but let me tell them that I do not hanker for power … I have been a street fighter and have always been in movements … so I am not afraid of losing power," Banerjee said reminding how the BJP ruled States too have their issues with women and how Bengal witnessed many instances of rape and murder during the Left rule.

"The BJP is trying to take political benefit out of this but have they forgotten the incidents of Unnao or Hathras where the women were raped and murdered by people with political patronage," Banerjee said adding "the BJP has failed to get majority in the Lok Sabha elections just because they have been doing dirty politics to create disturbance by dividing the people."

Accusing the Left for provoking women Banerjee said, "the Left rule too had seen numerous instances of rape and murder when the dead bodies were buried without any investigations being made and the skeletons were recovered when we came to power."
