Ahead of holding the maiden Assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Home Ministry has decided to rush highly decorated IPS officer Nalin Prabhat (1992 Batch), a counter-terrorism and anti-Naxal expert, to lead ongoing anti-terrorist operations as Special Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police with immediate effect.
Nalin will formally take charge as Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir with effect from October 1, 2024, immediately after the superannuation of sitting DGP RR Swain on September 30, 2024.
An appointment order in this regard was issued by the Union Home Ministry on Thursday, a day after the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Wednesday sanctioned the inter-cadre deputation of Nalin, Director-General of the National Security Guard (NSG), from the Andhra Pradesh to AGMUT cadre for a tenure of three years.
The Special DGP is expected to strengthen the intelligence gathering network of Jammu and Kashmir police besides intensifying anti-terrorist operations to create a conducive atmosphere for holding peaceful Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
Nailn, 55, has earlier won three police gallantry medals. He also headed the specialised anti-Naxal police force ‘Greyhounds’ of Andhra Pradesh, his former cadre State.
He has extensively served in the CRPF as he headed its Kashmir region deployment as the IG operations and ADG.
Meanwhile, a joint team of security forces have further intensified their anti-terrorist operations across the Jammu region after gunning down one of the foreign terrorists in the Assar area of Doda on Wednesday. Captain Deepak Singh, leading the operations from the front, laid down his life in the line of duty before neutralizing the lone terrorist. According to official sources, at least three terrorists managed to flee after inflicting fatal injury to an army officer.
During the overnight operation in the Assar forest area of Doda the security forces also managed to recover one US-made M4 rifle, three bags, and other materials from the encounter site. His mortal remains were dispatched to his native place in Dehradun for the final rites with full military honors. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) paid floral tribute to Captain Deepak Singh, at Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun.
In another related development, the Jammu and Kashmir police have established 19 special counterterror units, each headed by a Dy SP, in 8 terror-hit districts of Jammu. These teams will remain stationed and will conduct counterterror operations alongside looking after routine crime in the areas.
The units have been set up in the areas that witnessed terror attacks in recent months across the Jammu province.
According to official sources, these units will remain stationed at Latti and Panchari of Udhampur district. Malhar, Bani of Kathua district. Pouni/Ransoo, Mahore, Chassana, Gulabgarh, and Passana of Reasi district. Dessa/Kastigarh, Assar of Doda district.Dachhan, Drabshalla of Kishtwar district. Ramsoo, Chanderkote/Batote Sangaldan/Dharamkund of Ramban district. Kalakote of Rajouri district, Baffliaz/Behramgalla, Mandi/Loran, Gursai of Poonch district.
