Women to take out midnight march in WB

Thursday, 15 August 2024 | Saugar Sengupta | Kolkata

At the stroke of midnight when India will rise up to celebrate her 78th year of Independence, lakhs of women from Bengal will converge at more than 250 places across the State demanding justice for the raped and murdered lady doctor and more importantly safety and security for the fairer sex.

The all-women midnight march has been christened “night is ours” a la the popular slogan “Take Back the Night” that rent the air at Philadelphia in 1975 calling upon the women to unite against the ghastly rape and murder of a woman.

A random call on the Facebook by a student of prestigious Presidency University — to “take control of the night” much in line with the midnight march of Philadelphia — seems to have spread like wild fire with Netizens all over the state down to the village offering to participate in the solidarity march at 11.55 pm.

“Laxmir Bhandar, Kanyashree My Foot!” What value do these highly publicised schemes have for us where there is no safety for a doctor inside her second home the hospital and where the Government comes out shamelessly to shield the heinous rapists and murderers,” said a woman activist at Manicktala.

“Enough is enough … on the one hand you will purchase women votes by offering Rs 1,000 and on the other you allow your stooges and fix top play with their bodies … even doctors are not spared … and if even the doctors are not spared at their work place then what value the trivial women have before your men … from Sandeshkhali to RG Kar to any place you name … enough is enough we want not only justice for our murdered doctor … we also want freedom,” said Ambika a student from Jadavpur.

The apolitical protest march also to be joined by women is likely to assume the status of a statewide movement, Rimjhim the student who first gave out the call said adding “now I am told women will hit the streets in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangaluru, Hyderabad and many other places making it a Nirbhaya type movement.

A woman doctor and a Postgraduate student was found raped and murdered in the wee hours of Friday at inside the premium RG Kar Medical College leading to massive protest throughout the State with doctors of all the government hospitals striking work indefinitely till justice was met.
