Nearly 5,000 NREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005) workers from across the country have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the immediate resumption of NREGA work in West Bengal to ensure the livelihood of the State workers.
The move follows after the Central Government halted NREGA funding for West Bengal in December 2021, invoking Section 27 of the Act, leading to a complete freeze on NREGA projects and leaving workers without their wages for nearly three years. Besides writing to the Prime Minister, under the platform of NREGA Sangharsh Morcha, the workers also contributed one rupee each toward the NREGA budget for West Bengal.
Workers from Bihar Jan Jagran Shakti Sangathan, Jan Vikas Shakti Sangathan, Pravasi Mazdoor Sangathan, Uttar Pradesh Sangatin Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan, Jharkhand Khadya Suraksha Jan Adhikar Manch, Chhattisgarh Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan, Gujarat Anna Suraksha Adhikar Abhiyan, Andhra Pradesh Ambedkarijame Punadi and Telangana Dalit Bahujan Front are some of the organizations who have joined hands for the cause.
