Modi waives big bizmen’s Rs 16 lakh crore worth loans, ignores farmers: Rahul

Tearing into Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his “pro-Adan-Ambani” approach, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday demanded to know from Modi as to why the BJP-led government had waived the loans of a single farmer, while it had written off the Rs 16 lakh crore loans of a handful of industrialists.

Addressing an election rally at Gondia in Vidarbha region, Rahul also came down heavily on the Modi government for failing fair prices to farmers for rice, soybeans, and cotton in Maharashtra and had all ignored the farmers across the country.

“On one hand, Modi waived Rs 16 lakh crore worth loans taken by a handful of industrialists, while on the other he has not waived the loans of a single farmer more than ten years of his rule, " Rahul said.

Alluding to the manner in which three agriculture laws came to be withdrawn in November 2021 after the nation-wide protests by the farmers, the leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha said: “ The Prime Minister claims that the three erstwhile agriculture laws were enacted for the benefit of the farmers. If those black laws were indeed in the farmers’ interest, then why did the farmers take to the streets?”.

"Modi belongs to Adani and Ambani. He attended Ambani's wedding, but I didn’t attend the wedding because I belong to you,” Rahul said.

Rahul -- whose first election rally scheduled to be held at Chikhli in Buldhana district came to be cancelled after his flight from Delhi faced a technical glitch – Rahul charged that the ruling BJP and RSS were working round-the-clock to finish off the Constitution.

"The Constitution of the country embodies values that have stood for thousands of years, representing the thoughts of Lord Buddha, Sant Basaveshwara, Mahatma Phule, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr Ambedkar, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This Constitution represents equality, love, and respect for all religions. When I show the red-book of the  Constitution is shown, Prime Minister Modi criticizes it and me,” Rahul  said.

Accusing Modi of having not read the constitution, Rahul said: “Nowhere in this Constitution allows the government to kill people or oppress the poor and farmers. Prime Minister Modi has not even read this Constitution. The BJP, RSS, and Narendra Modi continuously attack and attempt to dismantle the Constitution drafted by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, while the Congress fights to protect it."

Dwelling upon the issue of reservations, Rahul said that Modi often claimed that belonged to the OBC community, “yet he consistently disrespects the community. “Despite OBCs constituting 50% of the population, the Modi government allocates only 5% of funds to them, which is a true insult to the community. This is the reason the Congress is determined to conduct a caste-based census and remove the 50% cap on reservations,” he said.
