Bhattacharjee breathed his last on Thursday morning after a prolonged illness.

The Marxist patriarch, known for his commitment to communist ideology and pragmatic approach to industrialising the State was 80 and is survived his wife Meera Bhattacharjee and son Suchentan. Bhattacharjee's predecessor Jyoti Basu too had pledged his body for medical research.
