Woman's body left to decompose sans cremation

Saturday, 29 April 2023 | NIMAI CHARAN SAHU | SAMBALPUR

: In the 21 century, caste prejudice is still strong among the villagers as the body of an old woman lay unattended for hours as her relatives didn't turn up for cremating it. Her fault was one of her sons was married in a lower caste. The incident happened in Danra village of Deogarh district.

As per information, KhirodiniBiswal (70) of Barkot block died due to old age diseases. But her relatives didn't come forward for the last rites and cremation of the body. As a result, it lay there for hours together and even started decomposing due to the prevailing hot weather.

The reason behind the non-cooperation of the relatives was that one of her sons was married to a girl of a lower caste and hence the family was socially ostracised.

But hearing the incident, the members of the United Club led by KhirodSahoo, BuluSahoo, JayantSahoo and Sikun Pradhan among others came forward to cremate the body without caring for anyone.

They, in a procession, brought the body to the bank of river Brahmani and cremated it with full honour and thus showed a sense of humanity.

While praising the noble deed of the youths, the locals also criticised the role of the Panchayat and Block authorities on the sensitive issue.
