Committed to providing quality education to every section, the Yogi Adityanath government through the Social Welfare department has commenced efforts to enable students in all 105 Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya Vidyalayas across the state to attain fluency in English.
An online training programme called the ‘English Literacy Programme’ was conducted in these Sarvodaya Vidyalayas with the collaboration of the Ashoka Fellow Leap Forward organisation. This three-day training programme took place from October 26 to 28.
The programme focused on providing training to teachers responsible for teaching English to students in grades 6 to 10. The primary aim of this programme is to enhance the teachers’ comprehension of the English subject and equip them with the ability to understand and speak the English language proficiently.
This initiative was started with the aim of improving the English of students from classes 6 to 10. It is noteworthy that many of these students come from rural backgrounds and are enrolled in Sarvodaya Vidyalayas. A programme has been devised to teach English to these students to improve fluency in their speech.
Consequently, the Social Welfare department is trying to make the teachers proficient in English. The goal is to ensure that they can effectively teach English to students, helping them read and speak the language without hesitation and with confidence.
Simultaneously, students will receive instruction in spoken English and English-language lessons. This approach aims to ensure that students, who primarily study in regional languages, face no challenges in pursuing higher education or gaining employment opportunities.
The online training programme spans 270 minutes and is conducted over a period of three days, which means 90 minutes of training each day. Following the completion of the training, a feedback test is conducted to assess the knowledge acquired by the teachers. Those teachers who successfully pass this test will receive a certificate. It will be mandatory for teachers to successfully pass the feedback test. Teachers who do not pass the test will be given training again. This process will continue until the teachers become proficient in English.
To participate in the programme, teachers teaching English subjects from classes 6 to 10 have been registered. Till now a total of 158 teachers have registered. Minister of State of Social Welfare (Independent Charge) Asim Arun stated, “The English Literacy Programme is being run to further enhance the English language proficiency of the students studying in Sarvodaya Vidyalayas. This programme aims to enhance the skills of English teachers. We extend our gratitude to the Ashoka Fellows Leap Forward Organisation for their support. This will greatly benefit the students.”
In 57 districts of the state, there are 94 Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya Vidyalayas offering education from classes 6 to 12. Among these, there are 65 boys schools while 29 are exclusively for girls. Of these institutions, 43 are affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and 51 with the UP Board. These schools attract students from rural areas, and as a result, efforts are underway to provide teachers with training in teaching fluent English, with the aim of enabling students to speak English confidently without hesitation.
