Delhi Water Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said on Tuesday the Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have been directed to carry out a safety audit of obsolete drains and pipelines following recent incidents of road cave-ins in the city.
On Tuesday, a portion of a road caved-in near Sher Shah road Tuesday morning, leading to traffic congestion at India Gate C-Hexagon. Taking to Twitter, the Delhi Traffic Police alerted commuters about the road cave in and advised them to plan their journey accordingly. “Traffic is affected on C-Hexagon India gate due to road cave-in near Shershah road cut.
Commuters are advised to plan their journey accordingly,” the traffic police said in its tweet. The affected portion of the road has been barricaded to prevent any mishap, police said. Earlier, a large portion of main road in west Delhi’s Janakpuri and Greater Kailash Rohini caved in due to leakage of a sewer line last week. Similarly, a road in Najafgarh caved in last week.
Asked the possible reasons behind such episodes, Bharadwaj, who holds the charge of urban development, said there are many underground drains of the Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
“Over a period of time, these become obsolete since new drains are constructed. However, the previous drains continue to exist.
