Punjab Govt launches comprehensive initiatives for NRIs, Launches new website, helpdesk at IGI

Saturday, 30 December 2023 | PNS | Chandigarh/Ludhiana

In a move to address the concerns of the state’s Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday launched a new website — nri.punjab.gov.in — under the NRI Affairs Department to provide a seamless platform for the NRIs, ensuring their well-being and fostering a connection with their roots.

The website, created by the state Governance Reforms Department with the assistance of NIC, offers detailed information on the NRI Police wing, Punjab State Commission for NRIs, and NRI Sabha. It also provides a range of facilities, allowing NRIs to get their documents attested and access various State Government schemes with a single click. The website also includes helpline numbers, email addresses, and a WhatsApp complaint number for visitors.

In addition to the website launch, Mann announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing services for NRIs. He informed that the State Government plans to hold five NRI milnis (meets), in February, facilitating on-the-spot redressal of problems faced by the NRIs. The inaugural meet, scheduled for February 3 in Pathankot, will include a visit to the scenic Ranjit Sagar Dam site.

One of the initiatives is the establishment of a 24x7 ‘Facilitation Center’ at the arrival hall of the International Terminal at Indira Gandhi International Airport at New Delhi. The center will assist the NRIs and other passengers arriving at the terminal, offering support regarding arrival flights, connecting flights, taxi services, lost luggage facilities, and more.

“Punjab Government officials will be present to resolve any travel-related grievances, both within and outside the airport, ensuring a seamless travel experience for Punjab travelers,” he said.

Notably, emergency lodging at Punjab Bhawan will be available if needed, making Punjab the pioneer state to provide such amenities at IGI Airport.

Further emphasizing the welfare of NRIs, Mann announced that the NRIs Affairs Department will be strengthened. The Department will now have the authority to take action against illegal and fraudulent travel agents, he said. Additionally, the Department will facilitate the repatriation of deceased NRIs’ mortal remains from other countries — a responsibility previously handled by the Home Affairs Department.
