Over 9.28 lakh challans, fine Rs 10.35 crore in traffic violation in Chandigarh in 2023

The Chandigarh Police have issued 928,356 challans for traffic violations through different mediums including CCTV cameras installed under the smart city project, on-spot, speed radars, Handycam and received on social media platforms and also collected Rs 10,35,11,103 as fines from violators under Motor Vehicle Act in the year 2023.  In a statement, a UT Police spokesperson said that the traffic rules and regulations have been enforced efficiently to provide a safe and secure flow as well as to curb traffic violations on city roads.

UT Police data showed that a maximum of 411,298 challans were issued for dangerous driving/ jumping red light. Second on the list was overspeeding with 202,943  challans and violating zebra crossing or stop line came next at 123,207 challans.

It also revealed that a total of 3156 persons/drivers have been challaned for drunken driving and 1736 driving licenses have also been recommended for suspension in different violations during this year. 

After a challan is issued, traffic police inform violators through SMS on their mobile phones. In case, people do not receive an SMS, they can check challans pending against them on the Chandigarh Police official website. People can also pay their fines at the traffic police lines in Sector 29 and in courts and Lok Adalats. The fine for overspeeding is Rs 1,000 and can be paid online. However, for subsequent violations, the police send the challan to district courts and the court decides the amount. Driving licence of violators is also suspended for three to six months. In the case of jumping a red light too, the police send the challans to the court that decides the fine amount and suspends the driving licence of violators for three to six months.
