Judicial probe ordered into Goindwal jail clash in Punjab

Tuesday, 28 February 2023 | Monika Malik | Chandigarh

A day after two accused in the Sidhu Moosewala murder case were killed during the clashes at Goindwal jail in Tarn Taran, a judicial probe has been ordered in the entire incident on Monday. Besides, the Punjab Jails Department has also ordered an internal investigation into the matter. In addition, the jail authorities have shifted no less than 18 inmates of Goindwal jail to other state’s jails to avoid any further clashes between the members of the two rival gangs.

In a shocking incident, a clash took place between the members of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and Lawrence Bishnoi gangs in Goindwal Sahib central jail wherein two gangsters — Mandeep Singh alias Tufan and Manmohan Singh alias Mohna — succumbed to injuries, while some others suffered serious injuries. Tufan was the stand-by sharp shooter to kill renowned Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala on May 29, 2022.

It has been learnt that no less than 25 accused in Sidhu Moosewala murder case have been lodged in the Goindwal jail, out of which, 18 have been shifted to five different jails— Kapurthala, Ferozepur, Roopnagar, Hoshiarpur, and Amritsar.

Tarn Taran police have booked seven persons — Manpreet Bhau, Sachin Bhiwani, Ankit, Kashish, Rajinder, Arshad Khan and Malkit Singh — all members of Lawrence Bishnoi gang for the jail attack. The accused have been booked under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and various Sections of the Prisons Act at Goindwal Sahib police station.

It has been learnt that a scuffle among the members of both the gangs had taken place in the jail around two to three days ago. However, no action of adequate security was taken. Authorities claimed that about 25 members of both the gangs were kept in a high security zone which was further divided in sub-cells.

Tarn Taran sessions court has directed the Khadoor Sahib judicial magistrate to start the investigation in the matter as, reportedly, the inmates used sharp-edged metal pieces from gates, grills, among other things, during the clash.

Jails Department has also ordered an internal inquiry, with the probe to focus mainly on how and from where the inmates get the weapons or other things that were used during the clashes leaving two dead, and several injured.
