Two hi-tech aerated foam fire tenders fagged off in Chandigarh

Chandigarh: To enhance the emergency response preparedness of the Fire & Rescue Services Department, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh on Thursday included 2 hi-tech aerated foam fire tenders in its firefighting vehicle fleet. City Mayor Anup Gupta and Secretary Local Government Nitin Yadav and Anindita Mitra, MC Commissioner flagged off these two aerated foam fire tenders at Fire Station, Sector 17. The Mayor said that these vehicles are equipped with foam-making machines, enabling them to tackle ordinary and chemical/oil fires effectively. He said that to further bolster the fire services across the city, the MCC has allocated Rs. 11 crores for the purchase of additional fire equipment for the last two years.

 

Punjab’s 1718 villages to soon get potable water supply

Chandigarh: Punjab Water Supply and Sanitation (WSS) Minister Bram Shanker Jimpa, during review meeting with the Department’s senior officials on Thursday, ordered the completion of all the ongoing surface water projects on time. Jimpa said that at present, 15 surface water projects are under progress in different areas of Punjab and after the completion, 1718 villages will get potable water supply. “The underground water of these villages is not drinkable and some villages fall in Kandi areas. Out of 15 projects, three — Mandoli Pabra, Bhavra and Nanowal (district Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib) — are in progress. The total cost of these projects is Rs 318 crore and 408 villages will be supplied with clean water through these projects which are expected to be completed by February 2024,” he added.

Punjab to bring Youth Policy soon

Chandigarh: Punjab’s Sports and Youth Services Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Thursday said that the State Government will soon come up with a new ‘Youth Policy’ with which the state’s youth will be empowered and youth participation activities will be increased. The Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh State Youth Award, which had been stopped for many years, was started by the current government, he said, adding that in the same way, in the coming time, awards will be started to activate the role of youth clubs. Since the majority of the state’s population is youth, the Government has drawn up big plans for the youth. More than 37,000 youths were given government jobs by the Government in just one and a half years, he added.

World Sight Day celebrated by Advance Eye Centre, PGI at Old age Home, Sect 15 Chd

Chandigarh: The Eye Bank Society of Advanced Eye Centre at PGIMER, Chandigarh in association with Lions Club Central Chandigarh have been actively involved in conducting various activities to promote eye health and awareness. On the occasion of World Sight Day, they organized a free screening camp at an old age home in Sector 15, Chandigarh. This initiative was aimed at providing eye care services to the elderly, who are often at a higher risk of developing eye conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma. Free eye drops were distributed to the inmates and free eye surgeries will be carried out for them in the Advanced Eye Centre, PGI, Chandigarh in the coming days said Dr Parul Chawla Gupta, Associate Professor in the Eye Department, PGI.

Bajwa slams AAP Govt for retrenching engineering institute’s staff

Chandigarh: Senior Congress leader and the Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha Partap Singh Bajwa on Thursday slammed the AAP-led state government for issuing retrenchment notice to around 100 employees of Baba Hira Singh Bhattal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Lehragaga. “The staff was not only facing retrenchment but their salaries had not been paid for the past several months. Left with no other choice, they were forced to hold a protest demonstration and some NGOs and farmers’ unions have also joined them in their struggle,” he said, adding that the AAP Government as well as the state Technical Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains have been so unconcerned about the citizens of their own state.

Cabinet Minister Hayer pays last respect to former VC Dr Gill

Chandigarh: Orthopedic Specialist Dr SS Gill, the former Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid Medical University for Health Sciences, Faridkot, was cremated on Thursday afternoon amidst hundreds of mourners from different walks of life who gave a tearful adieu to the departed soul. Dr Gill, who was 77 years old, passed away on Thursday at Mohali after a brief illness. Punjab Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer condoled with the family during the last rites at Sector 25 cremation ground. He said that with Dr Gill's sad demise, the medical education sector has suffered a huge loss. “Where he was a Specialist Orthopedic and an efficient administrator, he was also a good human being and a down-to-earth man,” said Hayer.

PSFC chairman relinquishes charge after 5-yr tenure

Chandigarh: Punjab State Food Commission chairman DP Reddy on Thursday relinquished charge after the completion of five-year tenure. “I strived to implement the National Food Security Act, 2013, throughout the state of Punjab during my time at the helm, with a view to ensure food security for all, especially the weaker sections of the society,” said Reddy during his farewell function held at MGSIPA in Chandigarh’s Sector-26. Notably, before Reddy joined the Commission, the chairman and members used to function from different locations. He took the initiative to house the chairman and members in one complex and presently, Punjab State Food Commission is functioning out of MGSIPA, Sector 26.

Haryana Chief Secretary meets Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), delegation

Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Secretary and Chairman of the Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDC) Sanjeev Kaushal held a meeting with delegations from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), to discuss the progress of the Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor (HORC) project. This project encompasses a new 126 km Broad Gauge Double line with High Rise Overhead Equipment (OHE) in the state. Upgrade and strengthen embankment of Tangri river to protect industrial area of Ambala from floods: Vij

Chandigarh: Haryana Home and Health Minister Anil Vij on Thursday directed the administrative officers to upgrade and strengthen the embankment of Tangri river as well as construct boundary wall to protect the industrial area of Ambala from floods before the upcoming monsoon. Vij was presiding over a meeting of officers of Haryana State Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation, Urban Local Bodies and Industries and Commerce Department. Office bearers of the Association of Ambala Industrial Area were also present in the meeting.
