Sources in the Gwalior Airport said that the expansion work of Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Airport and the construction of a new terminal building will be completed within the next couple of months. This is earlier than the scheduled time for completion. The foundation stone of this expansion and construction work was laid by Home Minister Amit Shah on October 16, 2022.
The new terminal building will be spread over 20,230 square meters as against the existing 3,500 square meter terminal. The new terminal is expected to accommodate more than 1400 passengers even during peak hours. The newly constructed terminal building will have the capacity to serve 1.5 million passengers in a year and the important thing is that the expansion of Gwalior Airport and the construction of some new areas is being done using water harvesting and solar energy, for which electricity generation is done in the premises. More capacity solar plant will also be established in the coming months.
Currently the airport has parking space for only 3 aircrafts; the new terminal building will have parking facilities for 13 aircrafts.
At the time of inauguration, Home Minister Shri Amit Shah had said that according to the plan of this air terminal, it will be included in the best airports of the country and Gwalior will soon be connected by air from every corner of the country.
Earlier Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia had tweeted that the new terminal of Gwalior Airport, which is taking shape rapidly, will make many dreams come true. As per his tweet, this terminal building, spread over 20,230 square meters and being constructed at a cost of ? 498.70 crore, will give new wings to tourism, business and employment in the Gwalior region along with fulfilling regional aspirations.
It is to be noted here that Madhav Rao Scindia, father of Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, had laid the foundation stone of Gwalior Airport 37 years ago.
