Congress leader Major Singh Dhaliwal was shot by a woman in Tarn Taran on Monday owing to some “personal reasons”.
Dhaliwal was the chairman of the Patti market committee during the previous Congress regime.
The woman fired several shots at the Congress leader near a marriage palace owned by him in Sangwa village in the bordering town of Patti. Two bullets hit him and he died, said Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police Gurmeet Chauhan.
He said that the woman was related to Dhaliwal and allegedly killed him because of some personal reasons. Police teams have been dispatched to arrest the accused, he added.
Major Singh was present at his marriage palace and was sitting in the palace doing calculations with his employees, when a woman, identified as Amandeep Kaur, reached the palace.
The police maintained that the two started arguing over something, and as things turn worse, Amandeep picked up Dhaliwal’s pistol and opened fire at him. Two bullets hit Major Singh in the chest. The resort staff immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
As per preliminary probe, the Police maintained that the murder seems to be because of rivalry. “CCTV footage is being scanned to identify whether there was someone else with the woman. The accused woman took the pistol with her after the incident. It will be clear only after talking to the family for what reasons this murder was done,” said the police officials.
