With the help of the Agriculture Department, farmers in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district are diversifying crops and achieving favourable yields with crops like wheat, flax, lentils, moong and corn.
The 'Targeting Rice Fellow Area' (TRFA) scheme provides subsidies for seeds to encourage farmers to cultivate alternative crops which require less water and incur lower costs than paddy.
Inspired by information and success stories, Rajesh Yadav, a farmer from Takhatpur block, sowed a mixture of wheat and lentils with the guidance of the Rural Agricultural Extension officers.
The result was a successful harvest with minimal water usage, prompting other farmers to follow suit and adopt mixed cropping practices.
