Tension ran high at Nahara Square in the Kamarda area of Baleswar district on Thursday when a girl student on a bicycle was knocked down by a speeding dumper.
Two other girl students were also injured in the accident. The deceased was identified as Anita Sethi.
Irate locals blocked the road demanding compensation for the girl’s family and action against the truck driver. Vehicular movement was disrupted for hours. The Jaleswar SDPO and other police officials rushed to the spot and pacified the agitators, following which the blockade was lifted.
Anita and her friends were returning by their bicycles after tuitions when the dumper coming from the Chandaneswar side hit Anita’s bicycle resulting in her death at the spot. .
Although the driver fled with the lorry, he was chased and caught by locals and handed over to police.
