AAP gears up for debate as Opposition accuses it of gimmickry

Wednesday, 01 November 2023 | Monika Malik | Chandigarh

On Punjab Day, the political arena is set for an explosive confrontation as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is all prepared to take the stage in a debate that aims to scrutinize the state's most pressing issues. But, this highly anticipated event is marred by the uncertainty regarding the participation from mainstream political parties. In fact, these parties are accusing the ruling AAP of misguiding the people of Punjab and labeling the debate as nothing more than a gimmick.

As the clock ticks toward the scheduled debate, AAP is armed with a list of critical issues that they intend to address. These concerns span the spectrum, from the troubling drug epidemic to the mass unemployment of the state's youth, the exploitation of Punjab's water resources, and the dwindling state of agriculture.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his party have thrown down the gauntlet, opening their doors to the opposition leaders. Yet, not a single representative from the traditional political parties has officially accepted the invitation.

Instead, the leaders of the opposition parties have accused the AAP Government of misleading the public with their ‘Maha-Bahas’ or ‘grand debate’, while labeling the event as a mere “PR exercise” and dismissing it as a “gimmick”, arguing that it sidesteps the real issues facing Punjab.

AAP spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang expressed his frustration, highlighting that the opposition leaders are making excuses to avoid the debate. Security arrangements have been tightened to ensure the safety of all participants and attendees at the debate.

The debate’s genesis traces back to October 8 when the Chief Minister Mann challenged leaders from opposition parties, including Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, the Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa, and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal. The challenge was a response to the opposition's criticism of the AAP government's stance on the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue.

The opposition parties, however, sought a meeting to discuss the format of the debate, suggesting that it should revolve around the contentious issue of the SYL canal. These discussions bore no fruit.

SAD leader and former Minister Bikram Singh Majithia criticized Mann for what he perceived as an attempt to sidetrack the SYL issue. Echoing the same sentiment, Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar dismissed the debate as a “propaganda” and a “gimmick” that offers no benefit to the people of the state.

With none of the mainstream political parties confirming their participation in the debate, the focus now shifts to the implications of their refusal. This standoff is indicative of the deep-seated divides within Punjab’s political landscape, and it raises questions about the state’s path forward in addressing its most pressing concerns.

The significance of this debate cannot be overstated, as it seeks to delve into the numerous challenges that have faced Punjab since its inception in 1966, include the declining state of agriculture, economic downturns, the exploitation of Punjab’s water resources, the proliferation of the drug trade, and the youth exodus from the state, with contentious issue of SYL and state’s rivers topping the list.

Setting the stage for the mega showdown on its official page on X (formerly Twitter), the AAP declared, “On November 1st, there will be a grand revelation. Punjab will learn who has perpetuated the drug menace, who harboured gangsters, who left the youth unemployed, and who betrayed the people of Punjab. The ‘Maha-Bahas’ of Punjab will expose the truth like never before. All will be revealed!”

The initiative is an extension of a teaser released by the AAP on their official page, titled ‘Main Punjab Bolda Haan’, in which Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann proposed a comprehensive discussion. Mann invites not just the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) but all opposition parties to the debate, emphasizing that it is not limited to one specific issue.

The debate is scheduled for 12 pm at the Punjab Agriculture University at Ludhiana, and will allocate each party 30 minutes to present its perspective.

In response to whether he would participate in the debate, Jakhar urged everyone to “wait for one day” and criticized the AAP government for issues like deteriorating law and order, debt, illegal mining, drugs, and unfulfilled promises.

Warring stated that he would partake in the debate if Mann apologized for his stance on the SYL issue, addressed the worsening law and order, vowed to eradicate the drug problem within a month, and ensured justice for the family of slain singer Sidhu Moosewala.

With the debate’s impending date, the focus is not only on the issues that will be discussed but also on the political implications of the opposition's refusal to participate. The debate offers an opportunity for opposition leaders to demonstrate their commitment to addressing Punjab's challenges, and its outcome may shape the state's political and socio-economic landscape.

AAP appeals to all opposition parties to participate in debate

Making an appeal to the leaders of all opposition parties to participate in the debate, the Aam Aadmi Party’s Punjab unit’s chief spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang on Tuesday challenged the opposition leaders to bring documents to support their allegations against the AAP-led Punjab Government.

Kang accused the leaders of Akali Dal, Congress and BJP for “making excuses to back out of this discussion”, as they were not serious about the issues of Punjab. He appealed to Jakhar, Sukhbir Badal, Warring and Pratap Bajwa to not find excuses to run away from their accountability and participate in this debate for Punjab. On the issue of security in Ludhiana for Tuesday, Kang said that it is the responsibility of the State Government to protect all the leaders and people present in this debate and officials are taking necessary measures only.

Police clampdown reflects CM's fear of facing questions over SYL failure: Jakhar

Targeting the State Government for trying to run away from facing the people of Punjab, Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar said that massive Police clampdown in Ludhiana shows CM's fear in the face of impending questioning during the November 1 debate.  “This unprecedented police presence in Ludhiana belies the congenial environment which should have been created for a critical debate over grave issues being faced by Punjab,” he said.

Blaming the state government for its failure to utilize the opportunity to discuss, debate and evolve a consensus over issues of the day, he said that it is a pre-planned strategy to instigate the people and then shift the blame from the Government's shoulders. The State Government has divided people by its unwarranted response on this issue and it is clear the state Administration is feeling entangled after inviting people for a debate through an Open Invitation, Jakhar said.

CM misusing Punjab Police to keep ordinary Punjabis out of debate: SAD

SAD leader Bikram Majithia said that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was set to insult Punjab and Punjabis on Punjab Day on Wednesday by creating divisions in the State polity and derailing the SYL canal issue deliberately on the directions of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal.

“Chief Minister first failed to call an all-party meeting to bring all parties together in order to save the loot of Punjab’s river waters. Now, the SYL issue has been further relegated to the sidelines with the Chief Minister announcing that 19 issues would be taken up for discussion in the so-called debate being organized by the government in Ludhiana within a time span of 30 minutes for each speaker. This means AAP government is not serious about getting all political parties on one platform on the most sensitive issue of the SYL canal,” he said.

Majithia also condemned the manner in which the Punjab Police was being misused to keep Punjabis out of the debate. “The entire Ludhiana city has been turned into a cantonment with even the ongoing Sarus fair being held in the city being closed abruptly,” he said, adding that the movement of all heads of unions as well as those of Kisan organizations has been restricted to prevent them from reaching the debate venue which is reminding people of the days of Emergency.
